The Art of Letting Go: How Detachment Brings Freedom and Inner Peace

As children, we built castles in the sand — and then we tore them down. We had invested time, often an entire day at the beach, to complete them. And yet, the joy of stepping on them with our small feet, destroying what we had carefully created, felt almost liberating.

What changed?

What made us become so attached to what we have?

No matter how differently each of us grows up, we are almost all taught to take care of our belongings. And perhaps that is right. We learn to appreciate what we worked hard to acquire.

But were these things ever meant to be the goal?

Somewhere along the way, many of us lost sight of our priorities. We became absorbed in the effort and the things we accumulated.

Because yes — cars are useful, as are phones, clothes, and the objects of daily life. As long as we are able to be well with them — and without them.

As time passes, the innocence of our childhood fades, while the idea that “we are what we own” becomes more and more ingrained. And that is a pity.

Because not only does it distance us from our most authentic nature, but it also makes us harsher toward ourselves. We will never have everything — and so we will never feel like we are enough.

So let us remember how free we once were. When we built and destroyed without fear. Because what mattered was not the outcome, but our ability to create.

And that — no one can take away from us.

Letting go, then.

An art that is cultivated through practices such as yoga and meditation, but at its core is something much simpler: the ability to release.

To let go of things, situations, expectations — even versions of ourselves that no longer serve us.

And perhaps, within that release, we may rediscover a little of that childlike lightness.

The kind that reminds us that nothing truly belongs to us — and yet, we can always create it again.
