Healthy Lifestyle Habits: Why Consistency Matters More Than Effortless Results

“Let the kid eat — they’re still growing.”

It’s the kind of phrase that lingers in the childhood memories of many of us. At least those of us who had a sweet grandmother who didn’t spend her spare time worrying about our weight.
The years went by, but the height our grandmother so confidently promised never quite arrived. And as we continued to enjoy our food, our trouser sizes kept quietly climbing. That phase of jeans you could walk in but definitely couldn’t sit down in without popping the button remains unforgettable.
Of course, that wasn’t true for everyone.
How many of us know people who can eat and eat and still stay effortlessly thin? I live with one of them. And until recently, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t envy it.
But then I came across something that changed my perspective completely. In one of his books on running, Haruki Murakami writes that in order to maintain his weight, he has to exercise almost every day, pay close attention to what he eats, and resist temptation — just like so many of us who know that struggle well.
The Body Adapts to Healthy Lifestyle Habits
His point is that although this may seem, on the surface, to make life a little more difficult than it is for those whose bodies don’t visibly respond to what they eat, over time it may actually work in our favor. The body adapts to the effort, habits begin to shift, and in the end, we often become healthier and stronger.
Not that this is some kind of competition — it’s simply a thought that reminds us that sometimes what is good for us first appears in the shape of something unfair.
If a person doesn’t move their body, whether they “need to” or not, both muscles and bones gradually grow weaker. The body slowly loses its strength — and with it, our habits begin to shrink too, often limited more and more to the few square meters around the couch.
So perhaps we do have a small advantage: with a little extra effort, we may not only improve our lives, but even lengthen them. And why not? For all its ups and downs, life remains a wonderful thing.
And we don’t have to begin with anything extreme. A long walk, a little yoga, nourishing food, or even a hesitant jog around the block is enough to get started.
Perhaps, in the end, this so-called “disadvantage” was actually one of life’s blessings in disguise: a constant reminder to take care of our bodies.
And consistency in that care is, without question, one of the most essential keys to well-being. If you feel inspired to take better care of your body, you are welcome to explore our practices in Stavros, Chania.
